The Evangelical & Reformed Synod operates on a federated model that prioritizes the local congregation. We believe the Church exists primarily where the Word is preached and the Sacraments administered—in fonts, over pulpits, and on altars. Therefore, our Constitution explicitly designates the local Consistory as the sole trustees of the congregation. We operate strictly without a "trust clause," meaning the Synod legally cannot and will not lay claim to the property or assets that your members have built.
Our rejection of centralized power extends to our finances. There are no paid synodical staff to support and no mandatory annual dues to pay. Instead, we rely on voluntary offerings to fund our shared work and missions. This approach ensures that we remain a ministry, not a bureaucracy, and that your congregation’s tithes stay where they are needed most—supporting your local work and the specific missions you feel called to assist.
The process for joining the Synod is designed to be thorough yet encouraging, while guarding our Synod.

We are a "Big Tent" for Magisterial Protestants, but we are not a shapeless tent. Congregations and clergy seeking admission must affirm the supremacy of scripture, the creeds, one listed confession (Augsburg Confession, Thirty-Nine Articles, or Heidelberg Catechism), biblical morality, and compliance with our standards of liturgy and order.
